Like all body hair, eyelash growth occurs cyclically and has 3 main phases, which I’ll explain below:
Anagen phase or growth phase
This phase is very important as it determines the health, length, and strength of the lashes. During this phase, the eyelashes grow as much as they can and it lasts for 4 to 8 weeks. Normally, eyelashes have a growth rate of 0.15 millimeters per day.
Catagen phase or transition phase
In this phase, the eyelashes stop growing but do not fall out, and they can be seen in all their splendor. During this stage, if an eyelash is pulled out, it will especially affect the hair follicle as it interrupts the cycle, and it will take much longer to grow back.
Telogen phase or resting phase
This is the final stage of the eyelash life cycle, where the hair prepares to shed and fall out, giving way to a new growth cycle. This stage is the longest and can last up to 3 months. Just like with body hair, facial hair, and scalp hair, eyelashes are not all in the same stage of the cycle at the same time, which is why they do not fall out or grow all at once.
